News related to housing first policy and advocacy

New national data about homelessness hold encouraging news for the region, especially New Jersey.

The annual report, released by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, shows that homelessness in the Garden State dropped by 50.7 percent over the last decade.

No other state had a bigger decline in homelessness during that span, according to the research.

Anti-homelessness activists in New Jersey say the decrease isn’t tied to just one factor, but many — including the increasing popularity of a “housing first” model.

How this N.J. county is successfully helping families find affordable homes

After more than 15 years of gridlock in Trenton, help is finally coming to central New Jersey residents who have been struggling with finding and keeping affordable homes.

Families throughout the state are beginning to see the positive effects of living in affordable homes in inclusive neighborhoods in New Jersey.

Forms Working Group to Continue Efforts Proposed by Interagency Council on Homelessness

Trenton, NJ– Acting on recommendations from The Interagency Council on Homelessness, Governor Chris Christie today announced the formation of a Working Group to further explore ways in which to reduce and prevent homelessness in New Jersey. Specifically, the Working Group will consider implementation of the proposals put forth by the Interagency Council, including Housing First policies, Rapid Re-Housing, and improved coordination among state agencies and social service providers that deliver key services to homeless individuals and families and those at risk of homelessness.
